NEWARK - A 75-year-old man was killed after being struck by a car while crossing Bloomfield Avenue Sunday afternoon, authorities have confirmed.
In a statement, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray said the man was hit by a 1997 Toyota around 6:05 p.m. near the road's intersection with Mount Prospect Avenue.
He was rushed to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:35 p.m., according to Thomas S. Fennelly, a chief assistant prosecutor for the prosecutor's office Homicide Unit.
Authorities declined to release the victim's identity, saying his family had yet to be notified.
The driver of the vehicle remained on scene following the collision, Fennelly said.
No charges have been filed, though an investigation by the prosecutor's office Major Crimes Task Force remains active.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Essex County Prosecutor's Office at (877) 847-7432 or (973) 621-6581.
