NEWARK -- Authorities are investigating the death of a man found in a car after a crash in the 300 block North 6th Street Thursday afternoon.
Essex County Prosecutor's Office detectives were on the scene Thursday afternoon investigating the death of the man, whose body was found inside a car that had flipped onto its side, a prosecutor's office spokesman confirmed.
Authorities declined to release the victim's name, citing a need to first notify his next of kin.
The car crashed at about 2:50 p.m. Thursday, authorities said.
The man was transported to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police department sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the man victim may have been wounded by gunfire prior to the crash.
The cause of his death is pending an autopsy, officials said.
An investigation into the death by the prosecutor's office Homicide Task Force is in its initial stages, officials said.
