NEWARK — A Newark man has admitted to fatally shooting a 16-year-old boy on a city street in 2012.

Rasoo Scott, 26, pleaded guilty on Jan. 20 to an aggravated manslaughter charge in connection with the Sept. 1, 2012 killing of Daniel Ebron-Berbick, according to an audio recording of the hearing.

Under a plea agreement, prosecutors have agreed to recommend a 10-year state prison sentence for Scott, Essex County Assistant Prosecutor Nicole Buermann said during the hearing.

Scott must serve eight and a half years before becoming eligible for parole, and he will receive credit for time served

His sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 26 before Superior Court Judge Siobhan Teare.

Scott had been charged with murder, but that charge was downgraded to aggravated manslaugther as part of the plea deal. In exchange for his guilty plea, prosecutors also have agreed to dismiss two weapons charges against Scott.

While answering questions from his attorney, Sterling Kinsale, during the hearing, Scott said he became involved in a confrontation with Ebron-Berbick in the area of 226 Fairmount Avenue in Newark.

During that dispute, Scott admitted to shooting Ebron-Berbick in the stomach area, ultimately causing his death.
