1 dead, 2 seriously hurt in Belleville wreck
ESSEX COUNTY -- A man was shot and killed early Tuesday in Newark, capping off a deadly four-day span that claimed the lives of at least four other people in separate incidents around Essex County.
Brent Dickson, 25, of Newark, was fatally shot near 11th Street and Avon Avenue in the city, according to Essex County Prosecutor's Office spokeswoman Katherine Carter. Additional details were not immediately released on the Tuesday shooting.
Hours earlier, Power Gas Station owner Davinder Singh, of Iselin, was gunned down around 4:20 p.m. Monday at his business on the 400 block of West Market Street, near Central Avenue in Newark, the prosecutor's office said.
The start of the holiday weekend also brought two deadly crashes in the county. A single-vehicle crash overnight Friday near South Orange Avenue and Grove Street in Newark claimed the life of a motorcyclist, authorities said. The victim was identified only as a male.
Gas station owner ID'd as victim in fatal shooting
Earlier on Friday night, Luis Davila, 33, of Belleville, died in a crash in the township, according to the prosecutor's office spokeswoman. Davila, who was behind the wheel, was pronounced dead around 9:40 p.m. at Clara Maass Medical Center.
The driver of the other car, a 19-year-old man, and his passenger, a 21-year-old woman, were hospitalized in serious but stable condition, the spokeswoman added.
No charges have been filed in the Belleville wreck, Carter said.
In other mayhem Friday night, a 34-year-old man was hurt in a shooting on Chestnut Street in Orange around 8:30 p.m., said city spokesman Keith Royster. The victim suffered non life-threatening wounds to his back after a dispute. An investigation was ongoing and anyone with information should call city police, the spokesman said.
Meanwhile, investigators have not identified the person found dead around 4 a.m. Monday in Maplewood.
The discovery came after Maplewood police were alerted to a person lying in the street at Wyoming Avenue and Hickory Drive, according to the prosecutor's office. Officers found a male unresponsive at the intersection.
Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly previously said the person was pronounced dead at the scene around 4:20 a.m. The state Regional Medical Examiner's Office would determine a cause and manner of death.
Authorities asked anyone with information on that case to contact the prosecutor's office at (877) 847-7432.
