Police targeting Broad and Market streets
NEWARK -- A police operation focusing on the city's main crossroads has resultedin 30 arrests recently, Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said in a statement.
The operation launched a week ago at Broad and Market streets in response to complaints from the public has also resulted in 110 traffic summonses, 35 quality-of-life summonses, 63 traffic stops, two vehicle tows and 27 business checks.
Cocaine, 51 decks of heroin, 15 bags of marijuana, 191 prescription pills and cash believed to be illicit proceeds have also all been seized.
"This is the first in a series on ongoing operations aimed at addressing the types of activities that have a negative impact on how people view the city of Newark. We will continue to attack this problem, like we do in all other parts of the city, by addressing crime and citizen complaints through the deployment of both uniformed and plainclothes officers," Ambrose said.
"My actions will be relentless. I will take the steps to eradicate issues that reinforce the negative perceptions of the city."
The public is being urged to call the department's 24-hour Crime Stoppers' tip line at 877 NWK-TIPS (877 695-8477) or NWK-GUNS (877 695-4867). All anonymous Crime Stopper tips are kept confidential and could result in a cash reward.
