NEWARK -- Police are seeking the public's help to find a man wanted in a shooting early Saturday that left a Rahway resident wounded, city Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose announced.

City detectives identified Darius Mitchell, 36 of Newark, as the gunman, according to police.

The victim, a 35-year-old man, was shot on Hawkins Street around 3:30 a.m., authorities added. The man's injuries were not considered serious and he was later released from University Hospital.

Accused shooter arrested at court, authorities say

"Although police are actively searching for Mitchell, we are asking for the public's assistance in quickly locating and removing him from our streets where he continues to pose a threat," Ambrose said in a statement.

Anyone with information was asked to call Newark's 24-hour Crime Stoppers' tip line at 877 NWK-TIPS (877-695-8477) or NWK-GUNS (877-695-4867). All anonymous tips are kept confidential and could result in a reward, authorities said.
