Rock walls to Bolivian dancing: How Essex County will celebrate the 4th of July

A breakdown of when and where to see fireworks and other entertainment this weekend.

ESSEX COUNTY --  At Montclair's 66th annual Independence Day event, attendees can see Bolivian dances, a Gaelic band and sand art all before the fireworks even start at 6:30 p.m. There will also be guest performances by the Montclair Community Band, as well as floats and marchers and antique cars. This year's grand marshall is Jeh Johnson, U.S. Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security who hails from New York.

The festivities start at 11 a.m. at Bloomfield and South Fullerton Avenues, and they'll commence with fireworks at Montclair State University's Yogi Berra Stadium. 

The cost is $3 per person, or $10 for a family of up to six people, with $2 per additional person. Kids under 5 are free.

That's just one of the several Fourth of July events that's going on across Essex County. Here are some other stops to make.

Maplewood's Fourth of July: Come to Maplewood an early-morning 5K run, stay for the circus. Maplewood boasts a diverse line up: there's a parade, tennis contest and kids' relay, and it all starts at 7:30 a.m. Fireworks start at 9:15 p.m. 

  • Cost: Tickets range from $10-$40, depending on the package that offers a variety of circus and fireworks combinations.
  • Where: All events are at Memorial Park. Fireworks are at South Field.
  • When: The opening ceremonies start at 8 a.m. at Ricalton Square

Livingston Township's Fourth of July celebration: Livingston Township's festivities start at 8:30 a.m. and go all day. Attendees can see a car show, listen to music and play games. And, of course, there's a fireworks show.

  • Cost: Free
  • Where: Memorial Oval on Robert Harp Drive
  • When: 8:30 a.m. - 10 p.m. 

East Orange Annual Independence Day Celebration: The rap trio Naughty by Nature is on tour and making a stop in Essex County in time for the Fourth of July. The event will also feature local artists, like club music producer DJ Lil Man and R&B group The After Special. The event will finish with fireworks. 

  • Cost: Free
  • Where: Paul Robeson Stadium at North Clinton Street and Park Avenue
  • When: Gates open at 5:30 p.m., and the concert starts at 7 p.m.
     

Essex County's Summer Music: For the entire summer, Essex County is hosting a free summer concert series, with two concerts that bookend July 4. On Friday, July 1, make the trek for some oldies at "AM gold," and then see a "smooth" tribute to Motown on July 6 at Weequahic Park. Both concerts feature fireworks.

  • Cost: Free
  • Where: AM gold and the Motown tribute are at Brookdale Park in Bloomfield/Montclair, and Weequahic Park, Newark, respectively 
  • When: 7:30 p.m. on both nights

Ironbound Thank You America Festival: Kick off Independence Day a little early at Newark's Riverfront Park. 
The Ironbound 4th of July Thank You America Festival brings for the second year a large fireworks show to the Newark Riverfront Park by the Passaic River. Celebrate Independence Day with the whole family, come early and enjoy the music, arts and craft tents, and more. 

  • Cost: Free
  • Where: Newark Riverfront Park
  • When: Sunday, July 3 at 4 p.m.

Millburn-Short Hills Fourth of July: This year, Millburn-Short Hills is promising an "expanded format" for the whole family, including a rock wall, wrecking ball and radio-controlled plane display. They'll also bringing in musical acts like Enough Said and the Garden Party Players. 

  • Cost: $10 for the day
  • Where and when: Taylor Park starting at 9 a.m., and Millburn High School starting at 3 p.m. 

Fireworks at James Caldwell High School: West Caldwell, Caldwell, North Caldwell, Roseland and Essex Fells are teaming up to bring fireworks to the James Caldwell High School baseball field, with some entertainment by DJ Danny Duca. Fireworks start at dusk.

  • Cost: Adults are $3, and children 12 and younger are $1.
  • Where: James Caldwell High School baseball field
  • When: Gates open at 7 p.m.

Bloomfield's Independence Day Celebration: Like Eric Clapton, awards and fireworks? Bloomfield's bringing in food vendors, kid's rides and the Bell Bottom Blues - A Tribute to Eric Clapton and more, starting at 5:30 p.m. Fireworks go off at 9:30 p.m.

  • Cost: Free
  • Where: Foley Field
  • When: Gates open at 5:30 p.m.

Township of Belleville Independence Day 2016: If you're into songs of the 1950s, 60s and 70s, you'll want to make it out to Belleville for a live concert by The Cameos, an 8-piece New Jersey oldies group. They'll be going on at 8 p.m., followed by fireworks around 9:15 p.m.

  • Cost: Free
  • Where: Belleville Municipal Stadium
  • When: Starting at 6:30 p.m.

Township of Nutley Fourth of July Celebration: Nutley's bringing in music and food, with fireworks at dusk. If there's bad weather, the event will be held the next clear night.

  • Cost: Free
  • Where: Park Oval, Nutley Township
  • When: Starting at 6:30 p.m.
