Storm chaser tracking thunderstorms moving through New Jersey gets shots of vivid lightning near lower Manhattan.
A cluster of thunderstorms that swept through parts of New Jersey and into New York City on Tuesday evening didn't dump much rain, but they packed a good deal of cloud-to-ground lightning.
Some of those bolts were captured on video by a storm chaser, Reed Timmer, who posted the dramatic footage on Twitter Wednesday morning. Timmer's video clip shows a series of vivid lightning bolts shooting down from the black clouds over the Hudson River, just off the tip of lower Manhattan, and additional lightning bolts lighting up the sky over the city.

Timmer, who grew up in Michigan, starred in the popular TV series "Storm Chasers" on the Discovery Channel.
Another Twitter user posted a photo of lightning spreading out behind the Empire State Building, and others posted shots of vivid lightning along the Jersey Shore and over Delaware Bay.
The thunderstorms began moving through western sections of New Jersey at about 5 p.m. Tuesday, and some cells made their way across Morris, Essex and Hudson counties about an hour later. Those storms were followed by another round of thunderstorms that swept through parts of New Jersey after midnight.
Most of the Garden State has been dry on Wednesday, but there's a 40 to 50 percent chance of showers developing early Thursday morning in central and southern New Jersey and a smaller chance in northern New Jersey, according to the National Weather Service.
