Seth Boyden Elementary School in Maplewood quickly reversed the policy after parent backlash.
MAPLEWOOD -- Confusion and parental push-back has led to the quick reversal of a new school policy in Maplewood that required parents to show photo identification when picking up students.
School officials promptly ended the requirement at Seth Boyden elementary after "issues that became apparent on the first day," said school spokeswoman Suzanne Turner.
So, it was "quickly adjusted," she said, with a note sent home to parents the next day reversing the requirement. The first day of school at Seth Boyden elementary was Tuesday.
School nixes Halloween, cites diversity
"I wanted to ... offer my sincerest apology that a policy change caused some of you to experience delays and frustration during dismissal," Principal Damion Frye wrote in the note.
"I can only hope that in moving forward you know that your voices matter, are heard and that I am committed to ensuring the safest and most efficient means to exit children from the building and back into your care."
The note also outlined the amended procedure, which says that parents and people named a student's emergency contact list will not be required to show ID at pick up.
The procedure Wednesday afternoon "worked beautifully," Turner said.
The school will also continue to work with parents to refine the dismissal process.
This is not the first Seth Boyden policy that has created an uproar among parents. Last year, the school community was split on a decision to cancel Halloween celebrations at the school, citing its diverse population.
